Confocal means having a common focus. Confocal optics are designed to collect light beams reflected from the focal plane only and form a focus both at the sample and at the photodetector. A confocal microscope is a microscope using confocal optics and capable of creating an all-in-focus image with 3D information by scanning a sample with light beams in the depth direction and integrating multiple sectionally focused images.
