President's Message on Sustainability
Lasertec has been dedicated to developing inspection and measurement solutions using its unique optical technologies, guided by its corporate philosophy endeared since its foundation in 1960, "Inventing for your success, inventing for the future". As a result, we have successfully launched a number of "the world's first" products over the years. The mainstay of our business today is semiconductor-related inspection and measurement systems. They play a crucial role in making better performing and more energy efficient semiconductor chips as well as in improving production yields, thereby saving power consumption for various electronic devices and helping IC fabs reduce materials wasted during production. To express our dedication to solving social issues through business execution, we have identified the following five themes as the material issues for Lasertec: "Product development capability dedicated to economic and social value creation", "Responsiveness to customer needs and quick action", "Sustainable supply chain", "Organization and culture that enable talent to reach their full potential", and "Governance from a sustainability perspective". We are taking action in furtherance of these material issues.
In February 2024, we set mid- to long-term GHG emissions reduction targets as part of our response to climate change. Specifically, we aim to reduce the Scope 1+2 emissions of our Japan Headquarters by 42% by 2030, compared to 2023, and to achieve net zero Scope 1+2 emissions by 2050. As a first step towards achieving these goals, we have decided to switch the electricity used at all our own locations in Japan to electricity virtually derived from renewable energy sources, starting July 2024. By doing so, we will achieve net zero GHG emissions for our own electricity use at these locations.
Furthermore, we have set an aggressive R&D investment target for the products we designate as "Green Products" — EUV mask-related systems used in leading-edge IC production, power semiconductor-related systems, and lithium-ion battery-related inspection/measurement systems — because of their particularly high effectiveness in helping semiconductor devices achieve lower power consumption or because of their contribution to the development of better lithium-ion batteries.
In the years ahead, we will keep striving to create unique, high-value-added products using our strengths so that we can contribute to solving social issues and fostering a prosperous and sustainable society.
I ask for your continued support for our endeavors. Thank you.
