Occupational Health and Safety
Lasertec has established an occupational health and safety management system based on ISO45001 at its headquarters in Japan, encouraging all of its employees to participate in safety and health promoting activities.
We give top priority to the safety and health of all employees and actively take initiatives to make a safe and comfortable workplace.
- 1We consider disaster prevention as one of the important management issues.
- 2We set the goals of occupational health and safety (OH&S) using the information collected from all employees and based on risk assessment and make improvements continually to prevent injury and sickness.
- 3We comply with the laws, regulations and guidelines concerning OH&S.
- 4We strive to reduce OH&S risks associated with our business activities.
- 5We make sure that our OH&S training and education are proper and effective, and that all employees and subcontractors understand this policy and the importance of OH&S.
- 6We review our OH&S initiatives regularly to ensure that they continue to be proper and effective.
OH&S management system
We have instituted the Environment and Labor Committee as an organization to promote the company's engagement in environmental and OH&S activities. Some of the OH&S-related initiatives we have adopted are as follows:
- We set OH&S goals after analyzing the risks and opportunities relevant to us. We then make an action plan that describes what actions we should take, what resources are necessary for the actions, who is in charge of the actions, when is their deadline, and how to evaluate the results.
- When analyzing the risks and opportunities, we consider internal and external challenges, stakeholder requirements, identified risk sources, legal requirements, and others.
- We gather information about near misses that might have led to accidents, analyze their causes, and identify preventive measures to mitigate accident risks.
- We post the records of our OH&S activities on our corporate Intranet site to make them available for review by employees.
Initiatives for OH&S in the workplace
We have set up a safety and hygiene committee in accordance with the Industrial Safety and Health Act of Japan. The committee members patrol the workplace to check whether there is any OH&S hazard in the workplace and propose corrective actions. At the committee meetings, the members discuss what actions should be taken to improve the company's OH&S conditions.
OH&S education
We offer various educational and training sessions to our employees to ensure that they are properly educated and trained. Some of the examples of education and training we offer regularly are as follows:
- OH&S education
- Safety training recommended by SEAJ
- Industrial robotics training
- Clean room training
- Qualification training for R&D room users
Health promotion
We provide a safe and healthy workplace for our employees and actively support their effort to maintain and promote good health. Some of the initiatives we have put in place are as follows:
- We encourage all employees to take a physical checkup regularly. The percentage of employees who take an annual checkup at the headquarters in Japan is almost 100%. To supplement the standard checkup provided regularly at the workplace, we offer additional support for our employees to find early signs of health risk. For example, we pay the cost of re-examination at a medical institution for those who have found a medical risk during the annual checkup. Additionally, we pay for a more thorough medical checkup with optional inspection items at a medical institution for employees who are 45, 50, 55 or 60 years old.
- At the headquarters, many employees participate in health promoting events, such as long-distance walks, hosted by the health insurance cooperative to which we belong.
- At subsidiaries, we provide employees with medical insurance and/or medical expense assistance, and pay for their physical checkup, depending on the need of each subsidiary and their local practices.
Mental health support
At the headquarters, we conduct a stress check and mental health training on a regular basis to promote the mental health of employees. Starting 2020, a professional counsellor visits our office at the headquarters once a month to provide mental health counselling during the working hours.
Readiness for large-scale disasters
We give top priority to the protection and rescue of human lives in the event of disasters. In case of an emergency such as a major natural disaster or accident, we will set up an emergency response headquarters headed by the president, which becomes the command post to gather all information and dispatch instructions so that necessary actions can be taken promptly. We have drawn up an earthquake manual and a fire response plan to enable us to make a first response internally in case of a disaster event. We have also put a safety confirmation system in place to check the safety of all HQ employees in a timely manner in case of a major earthquake or any other disaster event. At subsidiaries, we are enhancing preparedness for emergencies by compiling disaster manuals and introducing alert systems, depending on their local disaster risks.
Safety audit at manufacturing sites
We conduct safety audits at manufacturing sites with the assistance of our manufacturing subcontractors. We check the appropriateness of their earthquake-proof measures and emergency escape routes, the identification of operational dangers in safety manuals, the records of their pre-operation checks and others to ensure that manufacturing is conducted in a safe manner.
Occupational accidents (at the headquarters)
There have been no occupational accidents that resulted in death or permanent damage for the last 10 years. As such, it is judged that our OH&S initiatives have been proven effective.
